Mindanao

Mindanao
is the second largest island in the Philippines (after the island of Luzon).

The Mindanao region (comprising Mindanao island and a number of smaller surrounding islands) is located in the south of the Philippines (with Luzon being located in the north and the Visayas in the centre).

Sections of southwestern Mindanao have a sizeable Muslim population, the only such area in the predominantly Catholic Philippines.

This religious difference, widespread poverty, and large numbers of outside settlers being sponsored to migrate to Mindanao by the central government in Manila have led to a communist insurgency and armed Moro separatist movements in recent decades.

Mindanao is the foremost agricultural area of Philippines with eight of the top ten exported agricultural products coming from this region.
